Popular Dialysis Products Linked to Heart Failure By Robert J. Boumis
Patients with kidney disease depend on dialysis machines to take over for their ailing kidneys. Often, these machines are people’s lifelines as they wait for a donor kidney or for their own organs to start function again. However, it has come to light that certain dialysis concentrates may have lead to serious health risks.GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are two products produce by the medical supply company Fresenius Medical Care. These products were promoted over traditional dialysis concentrates because they required less storage space than traditional dialysis concentrates. SSRI Birth Defect Risks May Include Autism, Study Says By Anne Bucher
When pregnant women suffer from depression, they must carefully weigh their options. While medications may harm the fetus, depression may have debilitating effects on both the woman and her unborn child. Depression is more than just feeling sad or unmotivated. Depression can lead women to rely on unhealthy and risky coping mechanisms such as taking drugs or alcohol. While many antidepressants are effective at treating depression, studies have linked antidepressant use during pregnancy to an increased risk of having a child with serious birth defects.
Some of the most popular antidepressants used today are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors like Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac and Lexapro. The use of SSRI antidepressants during pregnancy have been linked to several serious birth defects, including: |

Januvia Linked to Increased Risk of Cancer By Anne Bucher
Januvia, available by prescription, is a once-daily pill that helps lower blood sugar levels in patients with type-2 diabetes. More than 25 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S. Patients with type-2 diabetes have cells that are resistant to insulin, the hormone that causes cells to absorb glucose from the bloodstream. Januvia works by stimulating extra production of insulin from the pancreas to lower the patient’s blood sugar.Diabetes Patients at Risk of Developing Serious Januvia Side Effects The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is scrutinizing the type-2 diabetes medication Januvia, manufactured by Merck, amid concerns that the drug may increase the risk of patients developing Januvia thyroid cancer or pancreatic cancer. Januvia was initially approved by the FDA in 2006 to help patients with type-2 diabetes control their blood sugar. |

PGA Senior Tour Player Battles Back From Stevens Johnson Syndrome By John Curran
It's perhaps a sign of how long the struggle can be to recover from Stevens Johnson Syndrome that after a promising early career that included three PGA wins, golfer Gene Sauers is now playing on the Senior Tour.A number of common drugs have been linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome and its more serious counterpart toxic epidermal necrolysis, including the antibiotic Zithromax. Sauers’ SJS was caused by a drug he was using to manage the pain of arthritis, but the mechanism of action is the same. The disorders are caused a person's own immune system to attack itself, primarily targeting mucus membranes in the eyes, throat and even the skin. As with the PGA player, skin grafts and other treatments are needed as sections of the skin die off. |

Up to 190 American Women Have Died from Taking Yaz Birth Control By Jessica Tyner
Yaz birth control is strongly linked to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is a serious blood clot that can be lethal if not caught right away. According to some reports, up to 190 American women have died from taking the popular birth control pill, which has only been available in the U.S. since 2006. These ghastly numbers have led some critics to say that Bayer finds profits more important than the health of patients.

Young Woman Suffers Infertility from Mirena IUD By Jessica Tyner
"Emily" never had any problems conceiving. She has three healthy children and has experienced five miscarriages in her life. However, after the birth of her third child, she chose Mirena as her contraception of choice until she and her husband could decide if they wanted a larger family. Mirena is a popular IUD, a T-shaped device that's implanted in the uterus. It's far surpassed the popularity of copper-T IUDs that many women used in the 1970s, but it also comes with a host of risks.Unlike the copper IUD, Mirena is made of plastic and releases tiny amounts of hormones in the body. The positive side effect is that many women experience lighter menstrual cycles, many reporting no bleeding at all. That perk was enough to get many women on the Mirena bandwagon when it became popular in the early 2000s. Mirena is suggested for use in women who have "had at least one child." The reason for this suggestion may not just be because of a larger uterus caused by childbirth. |
