Fresenius' Fatal Secret: Hundreds of Dialysis Patients Died Before FDA Was Alerted

By Amanda Antell

kidney dialysis heart attackTwo popular dialysis drugs, GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, were issued a Class 1 recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March 2012. The recall occurred after the FDA was presented with a leaked internal memo from Fresenius Medical Care detailing lethal side effects from GranuFlo and NaturaLyte.

The internal memo  reported that 941 patients had experienced sudden cardiac arrest within Fresenius dialysis facilities after receiving treatment with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte. Studies also found that patients treated with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte were six times more likely to suffer a heart attack, or sudden cardiac death compared to other manufactured dialysis products.

The information contained in this memo was not released to the public or the FDA. It was only after the document was leaked and a Class 1 recall issued that Fresenius finally warned patients and dialysis centers about the potential risks of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte.

Mirena May Cause Reproductive Damage if Migration Occurs

By Robert J. Boumis

IUD injury lawsuitIntrauterine devices like the Mirena IUD are a type of birth control that offer plenty of advantages over traditional oral contraceptives. However, some women who have chosen Mirena have gone on to suffer serious health problems.

The Mirena IUD is marked as a long-lasting, reversible form of birth control. The device is inserted into the uterus through the cervix by a physician. Once inside the uterus, the IUD slowly releases progestogen. This hormone mimics the hormones produced during pregnancy, preventing the release of an egg. While the hormone is the primary mechanism of contraception, the Mirena IUD also causes some physiological changes, like thickening of the cervical mucus, that make conception less likely.

Lamictal Linked to Reports of Severe Skin Disorders

By Amanda Antell

Lamictal skin rashLamictal is an anticonvulsant drug used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder, and is also used as an off-label treatment for depression. For epilepsy, Lamictal is used to treat focal seizures, primary and secondary tonic-clonic seizures, and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Like many other anticonvulsants, Lamictal also seems to act as an effective mood stabilizer, and has been the first FDA-approved drug since lithium. However, no drug is without its potential dangers.

According to a recent report from The Lompoc Record, 17-year-old Gabrielle Corral was hospitalized in November after taking Lamictal. She required intensive care after a painful rash developed behind her ears, lips and inside her mouth. Her condition was soon diagnosed as Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS).

Problems with Propecia May Be Permanent

By Robert J. Boumis

Propecia health problemsThe drug Propecia is intended to prevent and reverse hair loss. However, in some men, it appears to have caused serious, permanent health effects.

How Propecia Works

Propecia and Proscar are two drugs that contain a compound called finasteride. This type of drug is called a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, which works by interfering with an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme helps regulate the amount of testosterone and several other hormones associated with male secondary sexual characteristics. This decreases the amount of testosterone in the body. Since male-pattern baldness is related to high levels of testosterone, finasteride can prevent and even reverse hair loss.
