Apple Settles Class Action Lawsuit Over Power Cord Adapter Defect
By Matt O’Donnell
The proposed Apple power cord class action settlement will provide cash refunds of $35 to $79 to Class Members whose adapters show signs of “fraying, melting, straining, sparking, weakening, discoloration, bubbling, overheating and/or separation of the adaptor’s strain reliefs.” The settlement also provides for in-warranty and out-of-warrant replacements of the allegedly defective Apple power cord adapters.
An estimated 10 million Apple customers could be covered under the class action lawsuit settlement, but there’s no estimate of how many of those Apple customers may actually qualify for a refund, nor any indication of a cap on refund payments.
The details on the Apple defective adapter settlement are unclear at this time, but Law.com reports that affected consumers will have to submit a claim form to get a cash refund. Customers who can prove they bought a replacement adapter less than a year after buying a MacBook will get a refund of $79. Customers who bought a replacement within two years will get $50, and those who did within three years will get $35.
The Apple power cord adapter class action settlement agreement still requires court approval, with a hearing set for September 12 before U.S. District Chief Judge James Ware in San Francisco.
