Massive Recall of Similac Baby Formula Issued
By Mike Holter

Similac recallIf you use Similac infant powder formula, go check the container’s lot number now. Abbott Laboratories has issued a massive recall of nearly 5 million containers of the baby formula due to possible contamination of insect parts in some containers.

Abbott issued the voluntary recall after they detected the presence of a small common beetle and beetle larvae in the product produced at its Michigan plant. The FDA has determined that consuming the formula that contains the beetle or their larvae poses no immediate health risk to your baby, but it could cause digestion problems, including gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of the small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.

The recalled powder infant formula includes:

— Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.

— Certain Similac powder product lines offered in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.

To see if your baby formula is included in the recall, visit the Similac Recall Website and type in the lot number.

No Abbott liquid infant formulas are included in the recall. Other products not included in the recall are Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, such as Similac Expert Care Alimentum, Elecare, Similac Expert Care Neosure, Similac Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.

A class action lawsuit was filed in the U.S District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana by a personal injury attorney whose wife was feeding their child the bad Similac baby formula. It’s also interesting to note that it appears Costco Wholesale pulled all of their Similac baby formula off their shelves even though the Costco sized containers weren’t included in the Similac tainted baby formula recall. Maybe they know (or suspect) something we don’t?
