Toshiba, LG and AU Optronics joined the largest antitrust class action lawsuit settlement in history last week, agreeing to pay consumers $543.5 million for their roles in an alleged price-fixing conspiracy for LCD panels contained in TVs, laptops and computer monitors. The three companies join seven other LCD manufacturers who reached a $538.5 million class action settlement in December 2011 after being caught price-fixing LCD screens. This brings the total payment to consumers covered by the LCD class action lawsuit settlement to nearly $1.1 billion in refunds.
The LCD panel class action lawsuit settlement will provide refunds to U.S. consumers in 24 states and the District of Columbia who purchased a laptop, computer monitor or television with a flat-panel LCD display between January 1, 1999 and December 31, 2006 manufactured by one of the following companies: Toshiba, LG, AU Optronics, Samsung, Sharp, Hitachi, Epson, Chimei, Chungwa and HannStar. The companies also agreed to pay a combined $42.2 million in civil penalties.
The LCD class action settlement only covers consumers who purchased INDIRECTLY from these companies. “Indirectly” means that you purchased an LCD panel in a television, monitor or notebook computer from someone other than the manufacturer of that panel (such as at Best Buy, Amazon.com, etc.). The states covered under the LCD class action settlement include:
Arizona,
Arkansas
California
Florida
Hawaii
Iowa
Kansas
Main
Massachusetts
Michigan
Minnesota
Mississippi
Missouri
Nevada
New Mexico
New York
North Carolina
North Dakota
Rhode Island
South Dakota
Tennessee
Vermont
West Virginia
Wisconsin

Once approval is received, Claim Forms will be made available to Class Members in early August 2012.
