Suave Keratin Class Action LawsuitKeratin was once a high-end hair treatment used to straighten the locks of consumers.  However, after the cosmetic giant Suave added keratin into a number of their products, it faced a number of class action lawsuits, including product liability claims.

Some of these Suave Keratin lawsuits allege that the products had literally melted hair, burned the scalp, damaged the structure the hair, and that some of the products contained formaldehyde.

In one Suave keratin infusion class action lawsuit filed in 2013, a woman alleged that the Keratin product had caused her hair to break off into clumps, leaving it rigid an uneven.  Suave initially tried to dismiss the class action lawsuit, but a Kentucky federal judge recently ruled that this class action lawsuit could move forward, and it is now headed to court.

In another Suave keratin infusion class action lawsuit, Dallas resident Tonja Millet and Los Angeles resident Darlene Johnson are suing Unilever, the manufacturer of Suave products, claiming that the Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit contains severe chemicals, which burned their scalps and caused permanent damage to their hair.

There are currently three separate Suave keratin infusion class action lawsuits that have been filed in Illinois, Kentucky, and California.  Each are from American consumers who purchased the kit since it was first marketed in December 2011.  Judges in each of these cases have denied Unilever’s motions to dismiss the lawsuits.

Due to these class action lawsuits and numerous consumer complaints, Suave recalled the kit in May 2012, but the lawsuits are still being filed against the company because it failed to warn consumers of this possibility.

According to cosmetic experts, these Suave class action lawsuits highlight the alarming use of chemical treatments, rather than women taking more natural steps to taking care of their hair, such as blow-drying.  Most style experts state that any chemical hair treatment should be left to the professionals, and that consumers are more likely to make mistakes when using such products.

Unilever has yet to comment on the ongoing cases, but have confirmed through their website that they are taking these claims very seriously, and that the safety of their products is a “paramount of concern” to Unilever.

The company has also agreed to settle a class action lawsuit accusing the company of making false and misleading statements about the safety of the Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit. If you purchased the Suave Keratin Smoothing Kit before Feb. 17, 2014, you could receive a one-time reimbursement of up to $10 and/or reimbursement for the costs of treating your injuries. Overview of Keratin Hair Smoothing Complications

Keratin is a family of fibrous structural proteins, which is the key structural material of the surface layer of human skin; it also the key component in hair and nails. Hydrolyzed keratin has become a common cosmetic ingredient in hair and beauty products, with some studies showing that it increases skin elasticity and hydration.  Most popularly, hydrolyzed keratin has also been incorporated into shampoo and conditioner. Unilever used it in a variety of their products from 2011 to 2012.

Unfortunately, keratin is a powerful ingredient which can do horrendous damage if applied incorrectly. This has led to the litigation movement against Unilever, with many plaintiffs alleging that their Suave Keratin products had caused permanent damage to their hair and scalp.  The Suave keratin class action lawsuits started being filed against the company six months after the keratin products were released. It was recalled by Unilever unexpectedly, and without much explanation. While the Suave Professionals Keratin 30-Day Smoothing Kit is still available for purchase on Amazon.com, it is no longer available on the company’s website, indicating an improper recall.

Unilever is yet to acknowledge the consumer’s complaints, including injuries and mishaps after misusing the product.  Additionally, despite the product being recalled, it is still advertised as safe on Unilever’s website.
