Young Dialysis Patients Fall Victim to GranuFlo Cardiac Arrest
By John Curran
Â
Many people assume that people who need kidney dialysis are middle-aged or seniors. However, the filings that have accompanied claims in NaturaLyte and GranuFlo lawsuits indicate a striking age range among victims of the chemicals produced by Fresenius Medical Care.
Once a patient reaches their 80s, it may no longer be viable to continue dialysis treatment, which is painful and requires puncturing scar tissue after a while. However, some NaturaLyte heart failure victims were quite young. A recent analysis found that one wrongful death lawsuit was filed on behalf of a patient who was just 23 years old. While it is tragic to see a life curtailed that early, it is not specifically shocking.
Many people have congenital problems that can lead to kidney failure, or have been in an accident or suffered an injury that damaged their kidneys. However, they can still live for years even without a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, that was not the case if they went to a Fresenius Medical Care facility that used GranuFlo or NaturaLyte in their dialysis treatment. They increased bicarbonates which led to heart attack side effects.
What may be interesting to some legal watchers is that the age range of victims from 23 to 89 years only represents an 11-case swath. It is entirely possible that younger and older patients suffered from problems while undergoing kidney dialysis treatment. Moreover, while many were at Fresenius Medical Care clinics, the German company also sold its blood cleaning products to other healthcare facilities.
Since the company and GranuFlo lawsuit attorneys both want the cases consolidated, both sides are looking to figure out which U.S. court will handle the hundreds of product liability lawsuits filed so far. While things are moving forward, there is still time for anyone who has dealt with GranuFlo cardiac arrest side effects.
