Chime class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Chime Financial Inc. is facing a class action lawsuit filed by two plaintiffs.
  • Why: The plaintiffs claim Chime failed to prevent a data breach that compromised their personal information.
  • Where: The Chime data breach class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

A new class action lawsuit alleges Chime Financial failed to protect customers’ highly sensitive data during a recent data breach.

Plaintiffs Cindy Castaneda and Lauren Goodloe filed the class action complaint against Chime Financial on April 3 in California federal court, alleging violations of state and federal privacy laws.

Castaneda and Goodloe claim that Chime failed to protect their highly sensitive data, resulting in a Chime data breach in April 2026.

Chime is a financial technology company offering app-based banking and financial services through partnerships with FDIC-insured banks. As such, Chime stores a vast amount of personal identifiable information (PII) about its customers, the lawsuit says.

The plaintiffs are looking to represent anyone in the United States whose PII was compromised in the Chime data breach.

Lawsuit: Chime customers unable to access funds during data breach

According to the lawsuit, cybercriminals infiltrated Chime’s computer systems on or around April 1, 2026, leading to a widespread outage of its services.

Thousands of users across the United States reported issues with logging in, accessing balances, sending money and using the mobile app, with some customers unable to access their funds during the disruption, the lawsuit says.

The plaintiffs claim that Chime failed to adequately train its employees on cybersecurity and did not maintain reasonable security safeguards or protocols to protect customers’ PII. As a result, the plaintiffs allege that cybercriminals were able to gain unrestricted access to Chime’s network and the files stored therein, causing a platform-wide disruption in services.

The class action lawsuit further alleges that Chime has not yet formally notified affected customers of the breach, leaving them to suffer ascertainable losses in the form of the loss of the benefit of their bargain and the value of their time reasonably incurred to remedy or mitigate the effects of the attack.

The plaintiffs are suing for negligence, breach of contract and violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law and Consumer Privacy Act. They are seeking certification of the Chime class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

Currently, Chimes is facing another lawsuit alleging the company violated the Washington Consumer Electronic Mail Act by sending unsolicited text messages to consumers in the state.
